How can I sell an option without owning it first?

First, let’s clarify that by ‘it’ we’re referring to the option itself (not shares of the underlying stock).  It may be strange to think about selling something you don’t own but when you sell an option, you’re essentially ‘selling’ your obligation, not the actual option itself.
